This year’s Yellow Jackets team was signed up to play three exhibition games in Canada verses the Windsor Lancers Basketball Team (two games scheduled) and the Western Ontario Mustangs Men’s Basketball team but, fearing repercussions from the NCAA over regulations the school decided not to embark on the trip even though the school received a waiver to participate from the NCAA.

The 2009/10 team is coached by Paul Hewitt, who is in the 9th year as Head Coach of the Yellow Jackets is coming off a 12-19 2008/09 record (2-14 in the ACC).  Following the 2004 season, he signed a contract extension that has him leading the team through the 2010/11 season.  In off season recruiting, Coach Hewitt signed.  Coach Hewitt lost five seniors last season and will look to replace them with a recruiting class of Forward Derrick Favors out of Atlanta, Kammeon Holsey out of Sparta, Georgia, Daniel Miller from Loganville, Georgia, Glen Rice Jr. out of Marietta, Georgia and Mfon Udofia from Stone Mountain, Georgia.   Pundits are claiming that Favors is a legitimate elite player with the NBA pumping through his veins.  The fans of Georgia Tech Basketball will be in for a real treat this season as Coach Hewitt attempts to get his team back into the NCAA Tournament.

A SHORT HISTORY

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men’s team began playing organized ball in 1906 under the now famous coach John Heisman (who also coached the football team and who is the namesake of the Heisman Trophy which is awarded to the top college football player).  Heisman began a legacy that would bring in such coaches as Bobby Cremins and John Hyder and attracted top players such as Mark Price, Roger Kaiser, Craig Neal, John Salley and Tom Hammonds.

In 1955, Coach Hyder put the program in the national spotlight with a win over the acclaimed Kentucky Wildcats led by Adolph Rupp and in 1960 played in their first NCAA Tournament.  Led by Roger Kaiser, they defeated Ohio University before losing to the eventual NCAA Champion Ohio State Buckeyes.

In 2004, the Yellow Jackets were the Runner Up in the NCAA Tournament, they made it into the Final Four twice (1990 & 2004), the Elite Eight four times (1960, 1985, 1990 & 2004), the Sweet Sixteen seven times (1960, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1996 & 2004) and have appeared in the NCAA Tournament fifteen times.  They were tournament champions in 1938 (SEC), 1985, 1990 & 1993 (ACC) and Conference Regular Season Champions in 1938, 1985 and 1996.
